Stephen L. Farris
Stephen L. Farris is a USPTO-registered patent practitioner, engineer, and innovation strategy advisor with more than a decade of experience in corporate and law-firm intellectual property and over 15 years designing complex electro-mechanical systems. His work sits at the intersection of technology innovation, intellectual property strategy, and emerging industries, helping organizations transform advanced engineering breakthroughs into protected intellectual property and strategically valuable assets.
Stephen’s technical background spans electric and hybrid power electronics, fuel cells, energy storage, and autonomous mobility, alongside deep expertise in patent preparation, prosecution, and intellectual property portfolio development. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with engineers, research teams, and business leaders to align innovation efforts with long-term strategic and commercial objectives.
He previously managed global intellectual property portfolios at General Motors and practiced as a patent agent with several leading law firms, supporting innovators across electrical, mechanical, and AI-driven technologies. His work has also intersected with regional innovation initiatives and federally supported research efforts, including collaboration with partners associated with the Applied Research Institute and advanced mobility programs.
As founder of NextStruct Strategies LLC, Stephen advises founders, companies, and innovation teams on how to identify hidden intellectual property opportunities, strengthen patent strategies, and structure technology assets that support growth, investment readiness, and competitive advantage.
Known for bridging the gap between engineering, intellectual property, and strategic business thinking, Stephen focuses on helping innovators move from breakthrough ideas to well-structured, defensible, and scalable innovation portfolios.
Stephen holds an MBA in Management of Technology, a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, and is certified as a Six Sigma Black Belt.
